Hiccough
It is an involuntary spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm followed by a sudden intake of air, which is abruptly stopped by a rapid, involuntary closing of the glottis (part of the larynx with the opening between the vocal cords). That closure of the airflow produces a repeated characteristic sound. It is said that the hiccup is caused by stimulation of the nerve pathways or centers that control the muscles of respiration, particularly the diaphragm. In most instances hiccups are transient and can subside after some simple activities e.g. holding the breath, deep regular breathing.
