Periodic breathing
It is also known as Cheyne-Stokes respiration. It is an abnormal pattern of breathing characterized by alternate periods of quick and deep breathing separated by periods of apnea. Once the apnea occurs it stimulates the periods of quick and deep breathing. The frequency and deepness of breathing gradually decrease which eventually leads to apnea. Periodic breathing appears as a result of impaired function of the respiratory centre localized in the central nervous system. It can be injured due to intoxication, head injury or intracranial tumor’s growth. It can also appear among healthy people during sleep or while staying at high altitudes.
