Body fat percentage

U.S. Navy formula

What is body fat percentage?

Body fat percentage is the part of the total body mass that is adipose tissue. For the needs of this study we will concentrate on the U.S. Navy formula for body fat assessment.

Why do we evaluate body fat percentage?

This index is often used to monitor physical fitness, health condition and progress during the diet. Body fat percentage is as important as BMI and WHR. However, it is less popular than those formulas because of its time-consuming assessment.

Methods of body fat evaluation

The best way to measure body fat percentage is using calipers to measure skinfolds at various locations around the body. These measurements are then used in different equations to determine the amount of fatty tissue. Another very accurate estimation is to use a water displacement test. Unfortunately a special tank is required. This method is most commonly used by sport professionals. There are also electronic fat gauges on the market. The scale sends a small electrical current through your body to measure its resistance. The device then this information to figure out your body fat percentage.

At present the easiest and the cheapest way to determine body fat percentage is by using a tape measure and scales. There are two commonly used equations – the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) formula and the U.S. Navy formula. The YMCA formula requires only weight and waist measurement, whereas the Navy formula is based on measurements of your height and the circumference of your neck, waist and hips to provide a more accurate estimation.
